English In Action Lesson Plans

English in Action Third Edition Lesson Plans bitmoji

One of my favorite curriculum publishers is National Geographic. Their materials are well done, engaging for students, easy to follow for teachers, and their representatives are always extremely helpful. Last year I had the opportunity to start teaching for the Workforce Training division of the college

where I work, a new and very fun experience for me! As a result, I also had the opportunity to explore some new curricula and found English in Action to be perfect for these practical, non-academic-focused courses.

This four-level series is American English and seeks to prepare “adults for work and academic success,” according to National Geographic. I liked how the books focused on themes relevant to everyday life for an adult in the United States of America. The books teach grammar and vocabulary in context and include sections specifically focused on work and civics. My students all commented on how the unit themes touched on topics they were interested in and helped them to better communicate at work and in their community. They also appreciated the opportunity to discuss various aspects of culture and daily life in the USA.

As I’ve done in the past with Pathways (reading/writing, speaking/listening) and Inside, I am going to share my lesson plans for English in Action with you. I made these plans for the third edition of English in Action with adult students in a workplace setting in mind. As with previous plan sets, each plan is in an outline format and lists the activities I used in the order I used them. Since I do not own all of the supplemental activities/resources, I do not include the actual resource with the plan. Instead, I have linked to each resource so you can obtain it directly from the creator. You can download the plans using the link at the bottom of this post or from my TPT (Teachers Pay Teachers) store. The plans are free in both locations. I do recommend downloading from TPT as I am able to upload a zip file there. The zip file contains the lesson plans as a single document for each level or as a document for each unit. Also included in the zip file are some additional graphic organizers and other small resources I made to go along with specific activities. Also available on TPT is a bundle containing all of the supplemental games and activities I’ve created that go along with the entire series. This allows you to get most of the extra resources I used with all four books at a 20% discount. I highly recommend this series if you are teaching in a non-academic setting, such as a workplace or community-based organization. Happy teaching, everyone!
